Description

1. Volunteer Overview: Make a difference in the lives of young people by contributing to their educational experiences. This role offers a dynamic opportunity to engage with school-aged children (K-5th and teens (6th -12th grade) in a supportive environment by providing assistance with homework and academic enrichment. By volunteering with us, you will play a vital role in fostering a positive and nurturing atmosphere for children to learn, grow, and thrive.

2. Responsibilities:

  • Assist children and youth with homework assignments across various subjects, clarifying concepts and providing guidance and encouragement as needed.
  • Offer one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions to support academic progress, comprehension, and skill development.
  • Support children  & youth to develop effective study habits and strategies for academic success.
3. Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Passion for working with young people and supporting their academic and social development
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact positively with young people, staff, and caregivers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Patience, flexibility, and a nurturing demeanor when assisting children with homework or providing guidance.
  • Reliability and punctuality, with a commitment to fulfilling volunteer responsibilities.
  • Prior experience in tutoring, childcare, or education is preferred but not required.
  • Dedicated to member safety and the Y mission, philosophy, and core values.

4. Requirements:

  • Volunteer application
  • Face-to-face interview
  • Criminal Background Check
  • Reference Check
  • Signed Code of Conduct
  • Completion of online New Volunteer Orientation (NVO)
  • Obtain CPR & First Aid certification within the first 30 days (paid by the YMCA)

5. Time Commitment:

Volunteers are typically needed for a minimum of 1 to 2 hours per week, with flexibility based on individual availability and program needs.

7.  Additional Notes:  

This volunteer opportunity represents the primary needs identified at this time but is not intended to be all-inclusive. The volunteer will also be responsible for taking direction from their supervisor or other designated YMCA team member.
