1. Volunteer Summary:
You can make a big difference in food security in the St. Croix Valley by volunteering at the High Tunnel Farm at Camp St. Croix! You will help our staff maintain the high tunnels, outdoor fields, and educational gardens. This volunteer opportunity also includes being part of a positive atmosphere that promotes team member and program participant safety and satisfaction in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Volunteers should come prepared with gloves, comfortable work clothing, and a water bottle.
2. Volunteer General Responsibilities:
- Assist the Farm Staff with seasonal responsibilities such as planting, harvesting produce, weeding, turning over beds, washing and packing produce, and other maintenance aspects of vegetable production.
- Engage other volunteers in meaningful projects throughout the year through fun and positive interactions.
- Follow all procedures and policies of the camp and association.
3. Volunteer Qualifications/Requirements:
- Ability to read, interpret instructions and procedures, and follow-through with instructions to job completion.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Criminal background check
4. Physical Demands:
- Ability to perform tasks outdoors in seasonal elements and conditions.
- Perform essential maintenance in high tunnel, outdoor fields, and wash and pack facilities which may involve, but not limited to the following activities: semi – reaching to full-reach overhead; crouching; kneeling; shoveling and pulling; working in narrow and/or confining spaces; reaching overhead on a ladder; twisting of the waist, shoulders, and legs; and lifting up to 25-50 pounds.
5. Additional Notes:
Directions to the Farm at YMCA Camp St. Croix: turn in at the entrance that says "North Entrance" or "Daycroix" (345 Riverview Drive, Hudson, WI, 54016) and follow the driveway all the way down, curving to the left, and then left again. Drive all the way down to the big red dairy barn, and park behind the barn in the small gravel lot.**
**For some of the larger events that require more volunteers, there might not be room in the lot behind the barn, in which case you can park in the lawn where others are parking!
