Description

The Community Council is a group of dedicated volunteers who serve with Y leaders to sustain and grow our impact and meet community needs. The Community Council provides insight into their community and activates volunteers and resources at the YMCA of the North to address community needs.

  • Voice of the Community: Provides insight into community and establishes and annual chart of project work to address community needs
  • Supports the Y Mission: Engages community & partners in support of the cause by leading or participating in projects, including an Annual Campaign
  • Advocate: Advocates for the Y in the community
  • Advise: Provides a representative for respective Mission Impact Advisory Council 

The Community Council year is June 1-May 31 and will meet a minimum of 4 times per year.

Volunteer Community Council Member General Responsibilities:

·       Develop annual chart of work to identify community need and determine the projects for the year to sustain and grow impact and meet community need

·       Lead or participate in at least one project team during their term

·       Coordinate and execute the Annual Campaign plan

·       Provide a representative (selected by each Community Council) to sit on your respective Mission Impact Advisory Council and report back to their Community Council

·       Consult with the YMCA of the North’s Governance Board

Project Teams

A project is a temporary endeavor with a start and finish undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. Projects have a 4-phase lifecycle: Initiate, Plan, Execute, and Close. The Community Council performs the Initiate phase by completing the chart of work which determines the projects. There is no minimum size for project teams. Determine the size of the team based on the type of project and resources needed to execute the project.

Responsibilities:

·       Plan, execute and close projects

·       Required to have an Annual Campaign project

·       Hold regular meetings as necessary (and complete meeting minutes) to communicate and complete the project work

 

Volunteer Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Minimum age of 16
  • 2-year term commitment
  • Dedicated to the YMCA of the North’s mission, vision and philosophy
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other volunteers and YMCA team members
  • Willingness to act as an advocate for the YMCA in the community
  • Completion of New Council Member Orientation

·       Complete the volunteer application form annually

·       Complete mandatory volunteer training and background checks as appropriate

·       Contribute a financial gift
